Understanding Garage Door Selection

Which Two-Car Garage Door Configuration Is Right For You?

by Gordon Ruiz

For a standard two-car garage, you have two options when building a home, a two single-door or a double-door garage. Both of these configurations can safely accommodate two average-sized vehicles. The decision between these two configurations is instead more about convenience, cost, and style. If you're building a home, here are some of the factors you should keep in mind as you make your decision.

Aesthetics

The look of each door configuration is the most obvious difference. As suggested, with a two single-door configuration, from the curb, it looks as though you have two small garages and with a double-door configuration, one large single garage. The double-door style is the most common configuration amongst homeowners, so if you want your home to have a unique look, a two single-door configuration is a better choice.

Cost

Another aspect to think about is cost. When you install a double-door garage door, you only have to include one garage door opener with the installation. On the other hand, if you choose a single-door configuration, you will need to have two garage door opener systems to service each door. As a result, you are essentially doubling your cost. If you have budget concerns, you may want to consider a double-door installation.

Vehicle Style

The type of vehicle that you plan to park in your garage is another factor to consider as you make your choice between installation styles. If there is one primary drawback of a single-door configuration, it's that the width of a single door is small compared to a double door. For this reason, if you have a large vehicle, such as a truck or full-size SUV, you might find it difficult to maneuver your vehicle in and out of the garage.

Temperature Control

If you live in a very cold climate, you should also think about temperature control. The size of the garage door that you install will depict the amount of outside air that is able to flow inside when the door is open. Naturally, a double door will allow more cool air inside. During the cold months, if there is not sufficient insulation, the cold air could cool the rooms next to the garage. A smaller door that allows in less air can minimize this concern.

If you have more questions about choosing a configuration, it's a good idea to speak with a garage door installer to learn more. Ask as many questions as you need to make the right installation decision for your needs.
